Seeing draws labelled "Provincial Nominee Program" and not understanding how to get into that stream, a newcomer asked how it works. Members gave a clean primer:
- Two ways into a PNP. Either a province notices your Express Entry profile and sends you an invitation (the "lucky" passive route), or you actively go through each province's PNP programs and apply directly to any whose requirements you meet.
- Say you have an EE profile — it changes the nomination type. A key mechanic one member spelled out: if you mention your Express Entry profile when applying to a PNP, the province issues a nomination eligible for Express Entry (adding points to your profile, processed online). If you don't, the nomination certificate can say "not eligible for Express Entry" and you're routed through the slower paper-based PR process.
- How this relates to your EE profile. Express Entry is a pool with multiple programs under it. With a high CRS you may be selected directly under the federal worker/experience/trades programs and never need a PNP. The PNP route matters when your score alone won't get drawn — a nomination is the score booster.
- You must act to get nominated. Having an EE profile alone doesn't enrol you in provincial streams that require direct applications — check each province's requirements and apply where you qualify.
