When deciding between CELPIP and IELTS for a Canadian study permit or immigration application:
- Try sample papers from both tests first. CELPIP publishes free sample papers on its official website — working through a couple of these alongside IELTS practice material is the most reliable way to see which format suits you.
- Weigh format differences. CELPIP is often described as somewhat easier overall but has more individual parts within each section, which can feel more fragmented. IELTS follows a more familiar, traditional format that many test-takers are already used to.
- Factor in your province. If you're applying through Manitoba's PNP, note that IELTS taken with IDP has historically been the accepted route there — check current provincial requirements before booking.
Accepted test providers and score requirements can change, so confirm current rules with IRCC or your target province before registering for either test.
