A member married after their spouse's study permit was approved, and wanted to know whether applying for a spousal open work permit (SOWP) would conflict with also entering the Express Entry pool for permanent residence.
What the thread clarified:- Having an Express Entry profile is not the same as having submitted a PR application. An EE profile just registers your CRS score and waits for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) — it creates no legal status and doesn't commit you to anything.
- You can proceed with a SOWP or any other temporary status application while your EE profile sits in the pool. As long as you haven't received an ITA and actually submitted the PR application itself, there's no conflict between the two.
- The caution point is timing, not eligibility. One member flagged that if you're actively also applying for a spousal sponsorship PR route, it can be harder to justify a spousal open work permit application at the exact same time — the advice given was not to apply for both a spousal PR sponsorship and a SOWP simultaneously without understanding how immigration officers may read the overlap.
The practical takeaway: an EE profile alone doesn't block other applications, but stacking a spousal open work permit and an active spousal-sponsorship PR application together needs care — get the sequencing right before you submit.
