A new arrival asked how to get address proof quickly after landing in Ontario to apply for an OHIP health card. Members shared the standard fast routes:
- Use your SIN and bank account opening letters. These are the two documents almost every newcomer gets in the first days. Get your SIN issued (with your Canadian address on the confirmation letter) and open a bank account — the account-opening letter showing your address is accepted for OHIP.
- A mobile phone bill works too. One member described the common trick of arranging a SIM/mobile plan early (some even set it up before landing) so the first bill — which can arrive within about four days — doubles as address proof. Whatever address you give the carrier must be your actual Canadian residential address, since it's what appears on the bill.
- Consider an Ontario Photo ID card. Members also mentioned getting an Ontario Photo Card, which both requires and then serves as government-issued proof tied to your address.
- Apply in person at ServiceOntario. Members applied at a ServiceOntario centre (one named the Hurontario Street location in Mississauga) — bring your PR documents, passport, and the address-proof document.
Practical order for the first week: land → get SIN → open bank account → activate a phone plan → take the letters/bill to ServiceOntario for OHIP.
