Can't get through to IRCC's call centre? Members share an alternate number and timing tactics

Step-by-Step

A principal applicant waiting on a PR portal request couldn't get past the busy message on IRCC's main line (1-888-242-2100), even calling right at opening. Members who'd faced the same wall shared what worked:

  1. Try the alternate line. One member had repeated success with +1 905-612-5416 — connecting 4 out of 5 attempts and being placed in the agent queue rather than hearing the 'currently busy' message.

  2. Call at off-peak hours. The successful calls were made around 8:45 PM to 11:30 PM India time (roughly late morning to mid-afternoon Eastern) rather than fighting the 8 AM opening rush that the poster had been trying.

  3. Calling from abroad? The same member used the TextNow app to place calls to Canadian numbers from India cheaply.

Historical note: IRCC phone numbers, menu options, and queue behaviour change over time — verify current contact options on the IRCC website before relying on numbers from an older thread.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Don't: Don't keep redialling the main line right at opening time — that's when everyone else calls and the queue message triggers.
  • Tip: Call at off-peak Canadian hours; members had far better connection rates late morning to mid-afternoon Eastern.
  • Tip: From outside Canada, a VoIP app (e.g. TextNow) makes repeated calls to IRCC affordable.
