Child's visitor visa expiring while family renewal applications are pending — does implied status cover them?

Step-by-Step

If your family applied together for extensions (e.g. PGWP, spousal open work permit, and a child's visitor record) before the current documents expire, and the decisions are still pending:

  1. Implied status extends to each family member who applied for their own extension, not just the primary applicant — as long as each person's renewal application was submitted before their current status expired.

  2. For a child on a visitor visa who applied for a visitor record extension, their implied status is specifically that of a visitor record, allowing them to remain in Canada while the application is processed.

  3. Keep proof of the submitted applications (confirmation of receipt) in case you need to show status to a school, landlord, or at a border crossing.

As long as each application was filed before expiry, the family generally doesn't need to leave Canada while waiting on IRCC's decision — but this applies per-applicant, so confirm every family member's individual application was actually submitted in time.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Tip: Implied status applies per person — each family member (including children) needs their own extension application filed before their current document expires.
  • Do: Keep the application confirmation of receipt for each family member as proof of implied status if asked.
  • Don't: Don't assume only the primary applicant's implied status covers the whole family — a child needs their own visitor record application on file.
