Under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) category, proof of funds requirements are narrower than the regular study permit stream, and using an education loan to pay for your GIC and tuition does not create an extra documentation burden.
What group members advised:- SDS only requires the one-year GIC plus proof of first-year tuition fee payment — additional proof of funds (like extra bank balance) is not mandatory under SDS.
- It's fine to fund the GIC and tuition entirely from an education loan. Multiple members shared examples of paying both fully from a loan (one example: a 16-lakh loan covering both GIC and tuition) without needing to show any additional funds on top.
- The loan itself doesn't need to be "hidden" or treated as a liability issue — showing it as the source of your GIC/tuition payment is normal and accepted; some agents may raise concerns that a loan looks like a liability, but the consensus was that as long as your loan documentation is well-stated and clear, it doesn't hurt your application.
- Make sure your loan paperwork clearly states the purpose (education) and amount, since that documentation is what supports your GIC and tuition payments if asked.
As always, double-check the current SDS document checklist on IRCC's website before submitting, since specific requirements can be updated.
