Whether you can change university or course after reaching Canada — and how much process is involved — depends on the type of change:
- Minor change, same field of study. If you're moving to a better institution with no major shift in your field of study, this can often be handled with relatively little added process, and can sometimes even be sorted out before you travel.
- Bigger change, new DLI or field of study. If there's a drastic change in your field of study or you're switching your designated learning institution (DLI), it's better to handle this once you're in Canada, since it can require notifying IRCC and updating your study permit conditions.
- If your visa was already issued for a specific DLI, changing to a new one generally means repeating much of the process while abroad first — the whole study permit review can effectively restart for the new institution/program.
- Think about downstream immigration effects. A DLI or program change can affect eligibility for later steps like the Post-Graduation Work Permit or Canadian Experience Class, so weigh how the new program lines up with your longer-term plans.
