When one spouse is the principal applicant on an Express Entry profile and the other is being added/sponsored, whether the accompanying spouse needs WES and IELTS depends on timing.
What group members advised:- If the sponsoring spouse already has PR or COPR, the accompanying spouse does not need WES or IELTS.
- Even after AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt) is issued, WES/IELTS are not required for the accompanying spouse at that stage.
- Before AOR, the accompanying spouse does need WES and IELTS, and — importantly — the couple's combined CRS score needs to stay in the same range as when they received their Invitation to Apply (ITA). Changes to that score during this window can matter.
The practical takeaway: the deciding line is AOR. Before it, get WES and IELTS done for the accompanying spouse and watch your CRS range; after AOR (or once the sponsor already holds PR/COPR), those requirements drop away.
