Does a PR applicant on SOWP need to report travel or address changes to IRCC after AOR?

Documents Needed

  • Webform submission

Used to notify IRCC of a change of address after your Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR).

Step-by-Step

For a spousal/outland PR applicant who is in Canada on a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) while their PR application is in progress, group members clarified what does and doesn't need to be reported to IRCC after AOR.

What group members advised:
  1. Routine travel does not need to be reported to IRCC once you've passed AOR — you're not required to notify them each time you leave or re-enter Canada.

  2. A change of address (relocation) does need to be reported. If you move and your permanent address changes, submit a webform to IRCC with your new address so your file stays up to date.

The distinction matters because failing to update your address could cause you to miss important correspondence (such as requests for documents or a decision letter), even though ordinary travel itself isn't something you need to flag.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Don't: Don't assume you need to report every trip in/out of Canada after AOR — routine travel isn't required to be reported.
  • Do: Do submit a webform with your new address any time you relocate while your PR application is in progress.
