For candidates with a mid-range CRS score (around 460) whose occupation isn't in a targeted category-based draw:
- Pursue Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and general Express Entry in parallel rather than choosing one. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, which effectively guarantees an invitation to apply in the next round — this combined approach tends to move faster than waiting on a general draw alone.
- Don't rely solely on hitting the general Express Entry cutoff. At CRS scores in the 450–470 range, reaching the general draw cutoff (historically 480+) directly is very unlikely, so a provincial nomination is usually the more realistic path to an invitation.
- Research province-specific streams that match your profile (occupation, education, or connection to the province) and submit expressions of interest to relevant PNPs while keeping your federal Express Entry profile active.
CRS cutoffs and PNP requirements change over time — verify current figures on IRCC's rounds-of-invitation page and each province's PNP website before applying.
