A closed work permit is not automatically invalidated just because you renew your passport, but re-entry needs care:
- Your work permit stays valid — it's tied to your status, not the physical passport it was stamped in. Renewing your passport doesn't cancel a valid work permit.
- Bring both passports when re-entering Canada. If a valid visa is stamped inside your expired passport, it's still considered valid at the port of entry as long as you present it together with your new, valid passport.
- Make sure you have a valid entry stamp/visa to show at the border — border officers need to see the link between your identity documents and your valid status, so travelling with only the new passport (without the old one showing the visa) can cause delays.
This is separate from your PR application — a passport renewal alone doesn't require you to apply for a new work permit.
