Students completing a 1-year program and the resulting 1-year PGWP often want to know their realistic path to PR, and whether the work permit itself can be extended.
What group members advised:- Studying in New Brunswick can open a PNP route during your studies. If you have at least 1 year of qualifying work experience in NOC TEER 0/1/2 (professional/managerial/technical roles), some NB streams allow you to apply for provincial nomination even before finishing your program.
- A PGWP itself cannot be extended. Once your PGWP expires, it's final — there's no renewal option for that specific permit.
- After the PGWP expires, you'd need an employer-specific LMIA-backed work permit to keep working, which is described as a tough route to secure — outside of occupations facing labour shortages, such as truck drivers or chefs, where LMIAs are more commonly issued.
The practical takeaway: use your PGWP year to actively pursue a PNP nomination (province-specific rules vary, so check current NB or other provincial criteria) rather than assuming you can simply extend the permit — plan your PR route well before the PGWP's expiry date.
