If you've applied for a PGWP and it's still processing (in this example, 3.5 months in) but you need to travel for a family emergency, group members flagged this as risky without extra preparation.
What was suggested:- Avoid leaving the country without an approved work permit and a valid TRV if at all possible — re-entering while your status is mid-transition (implied status from a pending application, but no valid work permit in hand) can create complications at the border.
- If travel is unavoidable, look into "flagpoling" — a process where you exit to a US land border crossing and then immediately re-enter Canada, presenting your documents to a Canadian border services officer at that point to try to have your new permit or status processed on the spot. This is a workaround some applicants use, but it depends on border officer discretion and current wait times, and isn't a guaranteed outcome.
Given the uncertainty, treat both leaving without a permit and flagpoling as higher-risk options — check current IRCC guidance and, if possible, wait for the PGWP approval before traveling for anything short of a genuine emergency.
