What to do when your Express Entry profile goes ineligible from entering the wrong funds amount

Documents Needed

  • GC Key account

Your existing account can generally be reused — you don't need a new one just to fix a profile error.

  • Eligibility questionnaire reference number

The no-login eligibility checker on the IRCC site generates a reference number once you're confirmed eligible, which feeds into a new profile.

Step-by-Step

If your Express Entry (EE) profile shows as ineligible because you entered less funds than required, and you can no longer find an option to edit that data or start a new profile, you don't need to create a new GC Key account — the existing account can be reused.

What group members advised:
  1. Your GC Key account stays the same. Simply create a new Express Entry profile under it rather than opening a new account.

  2. If "Create Express Entry profile" isn't showing, start over from IRCC's standalone eligibility questionnaire (no login required). Enter your details again with the correct funds figure; if you qualify, it issues a reference number.

  3. Use that new reference number to start a fresh EE profile — this effectively replaces the ineligible one without needing new account credentials.

Double-check the required minimum funds amount for your family size on IRCC's current published table before re-submitting, since entering an incorrect (too low) figure is what caused the ineligibility in the first place.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Don't: Don't create a new GC Key account just to fix a profile error — your existing account works for a new profile.
  • Do: Re-check the current minimum settlement funds table for your family size before re-entering figures.
  • Tip: If the profile edit option has disappeared, restart from IRCC's no-login eligibility questionnaire to get a fresh reference number.
