How long does an ATIP request for refusal reasons actually take?

Documents Needed

  • ATIP request

Access to Information and Privacy request, used to get the officer's notes/reasons behind a refusal.

Step-by-Step

Applicants who file an ATIP request to understand why their application was refused often want a realistic timeframe, since official processing standards can be vague.

What group members advised:
  1. Expect a minimum of about 2 months, and it can run longer. One member reported waiting more than 2 months with no response yet, describing that as the typical minimum wait.

  2. Requesting through CBSA instead of IRCC may be faster. Another member suggested that if your situation allows it, ordering through CBSA rather than IRCC directly tends to come back faster, around 30 days.

If your case allows routing the request through CBSA, that path was reported as noticeably quicker than going through IRCC directly.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Tip: Budget at least 2 months for an ATIP request through IRCC — it can take longer.
  • Tip: Requesting through CBSA (where applicable) was reported to return results faster, around 30 days.
