Historical note: this discussion is from the launch of category-based Express Entry draws in 2023; the eligible NOC lists are updated periodically, so always check the current list on the IRCC website.
IRCC introduced category-based selection draws targeting specific groups: French-language proficiency, healthcare occupations, STEM occupations, trade occupations, transport occupations, and agriculture/agri-food occupations. The eligible NOC codes for each category are published on the IRCC website.
How members explained it works:- The category lists are not permanent. Members expected the NOC lists to be refreshed yearly, with the format staying the same — so verify your NOC is on the current year's list.
- General draws continue. Category draws are additions, not replacements; all-program draws still happen in parallel.
- You still compete on CRS — but only within the category. If your NOC falls in a category, you are ranked by CRS score against other candidates in that category. You receive an invitation if IRCC holds a draw for your category and your score is above that draw's cutoff.
- It works much like a targeted pool. Members compared it to PNP-style targeting: falling under a listed NOC gives you an extra route to an ITA on top of the general draws, often with lower cutoffs than all-program draws.
Practical step: check the IRCC category-based selection page, confirm whether your primary NOC appears in any category, and factor that into your CRS strategy — a score too low for general draws may still win an ITA in a category draw.
