Applying for PR alone while your spouse is in Canada: non-accompanying is a legitimate option

Step-by-Step

A PGWP holder scored 494 applying without his spouse but only 479 with her — while she lived with him in Canada on a SOWP. Group folklore said listing her as non-accompanying while she's physically in Canada would get the file refused. Experienced members disagreed:

  1. Non-accompanying is allowed regardless of where the spouse lives. The clearest answer: you can '100% show your wife as non-accompanying' — it's a known and appropriate way to apply when points differ, used routinely.

  2. You still declare her fully. Non-accompanying doesn't mean hidden: she remains listed as your spouse in the application with all her details. Only concealing the marriage would be misrepresentation.

  3. Explain the reason plainly. Members suggested a letter of explanation stating you didn't have enough points to receive an ITA with an accompanying spouse — effectively citing IRCC's own scoring system back to them as the valid reason.

  4. Sponsor her afterwards. The follow-on plan (spousal sponsorship once you land as a PR) works as long as she maintains valid status in Canada throughout.

A minority view in the thread preferred applying together and improving the score — a fair alternative if her language scores could rise before the permit expiry deadline.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Do: Declare your spouse fully in the application even when listing her as non-accompanying — only concealment is misrepresentation.
  • Do: Add a brief LOE explaining the points difference as your reason for the non-accompanying choice.
  • Tip: Plan the later spousal sponsorship around her keeping valid status in Canada the whole time.
